Deciding who to invite to your wedding is a major decision that will impact much of your wedding planning effort. Before deciding who and how many will be attending your big day, here are some tips for thinking through your guest list.
- What kind of wedding do you want? Do you picture a big wedding or an intimate gathering?
- Keep your budget in mind and make sure to consider how much food you will need. Will you have a few guests for an elegant sit-down dinner or a big gathering at a buffet?
- The simplest way to divide your guest list is 1/2 to the bride and 1/2 to the groom. Don’t forget to consider any mutual friends and make sure people are not listed twice on your list!
- Remember to be flexible. Some wedding planners would suggest that as many as 20% of those invited will be unable to attend. For this reason, some people make a backup list (or a “B” list) for people to invite if some others back out.
- Keep in mind that the wedding officiant, members of your bridal party, musicians, etc. count as guests as well! You’ll need to feed them so remember to include them in your total count.
- Decide if you’d like children in attendance. If you choose to have an “adults only” event, only include the parents on the invitation and guest list.
