Music is more than entertainment. It is an important element in setting a mood. As you plan your wedding reception, music is likely to play an important role. Fortunately, you have plenty of choices from high energy bands, soloists, choirs, dance professionals, classical trios, disc jockeys, harpists and jukeboxes. That is the joy of music – there is something for everyone.
How to Choose Wedding Reception Music
- Listen to Your Music First – First rule of music for your reception: make sure you have heard your soloist or band before you hire them. If they don’t have a tape for you to watch, ask for permission to hear and watch them perform before making your decision.
- Be Clear With Expectations – Make sure you’re clear about how you want your musicians to interact (if at all) at or during the reception. Do you want them to mingle with guests at intermission or would you prefer them to retire to a “break room”? Have you made arrangements to feed them if they request for food? Do you need to add to your catering numbers and feed them as if they were guests or do they just expect sandwiches in the break area?
- Keep Your Guests in Mind – Just because you love the music of “Metallica” or “Price”. it may not be appreciated by your guests who like “Frank Sinatra” or Broadway show tunes more. Take a hard look at your guest list and try to balance both the tempo and the volume of your event’s music.
- Check Your Venue Layout – Make sure that the venues you have chosen – for both the ceremony and the reception – can physically accommodate the musical group you have chosen. Where will they be situated? Are there outlets available? Think this through before you sign the contracts involved.
- Dress Code – How will the musical talent dress? If you have preferences, state them early in the negotiations.
